Links with Iranian expatriates can aid handicraft exports

Interaction with Iranian expatriates can help the exports of traditional arts and handicrafts, said Mr. Hossein Hatefi, Deputy Head of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHHTO).

He further added that in order to sell the country’s handicrafts it is essential to identify and learn more about the target markets, and this can be achieved through the links with expatriates. Hence, ICHHTO has initiated to have good interaction with Iranian expatriates.

The organization intends to provide space for selling handicrafts. The government will acquire a portion of this space, which ICHHTO in turn, will handover to Iranian expatriates interested to invest in handicraft exports, added Mr. Hatefi.

Currently handicraft exports are carried out in a traditional manner. Handicrafts of this country are not according to the preferences of global markets, which creates troubles for the potential exporters, he said.

ICHHTO is supporting the handicraft artists, by all means, who are in deep need of it, emphasized Mr. Hatefi.

However, the Deputy Head of Trade Promotion Organization of Iran, Mr. Kiumars Fathollah Kermanshahi said that over the last 4 years, the overseas sale of Iranian handicraft has witnessed a growth of 170 percent.

As per the statistics, Iran has exported $987 million worth of handicrafts during 2005-2008, while during the previous four years i.e. during 2001-2004 it had exported $365 worth of handicrafts.

Goods like hand-woven floor carvings, turquoise and other carving stones, inlaid work, potteries and ceramic were the key handicrafts that Iran has exported to USA, Japan, Germany and other European and Asian Countries.

During last four years, Iran has also imported handicrafts worth $677 million.

Establishment of a company for producing handicrafts needs an investment of 50 million rials. Toseh Gostar Tayyebein Company is making this investment, informed an official.

This decision has been made after the conclusion of an agreement between the department and the company. The project will come into operation within five months of conclusion of the agreement, he added.

Under this agreement, the department will introduce the said company to all related institutes and handicrafts for coordinating handicraft production and exports, he said and it will implement the policies and plans determined by the department and it will also invite the interested parties to participate in expansion of national handicraft industry.
